f you’ve ever wanted to become an automotive technician and be a mechanic who works on cars, you’re certainly not alone. Dixie Tech’s Automotive Technician Program fills up very quickly, and 99% of graduates are finding work in the field.
The auto tech program starts four new cohorts every year, each lasting 51 weeks. Oftentimes a cohort is full before its preceding cohort has even begun.
The demand has been incredible considering the program is less than four years old. But local industry has a huge need for skilled automotive technicians, and with so many job opportunities, it’s no wonder so many students want to become mechanics.
“We can’t train these students fast enough,” said Program Director Steve Cooper. “Most of our students are receiving job offers within a month of starting our program.”
Students learn about engine repair, brake systems, suspension, transmission, steering and more through hands-on training. This training prepares them to enter the workforce and immediately contribute.
“The Automotive Technician Program is one of our busiest,” said Jordan Rushton, Interim President of Dixie Technical College. “I’m so pleased with the reputation for quality that has been developed there. Our industry partners rely on our graduates to run their businesses. This industry is so important to the local economy.”

Not only is our auto tech program a driving force for local job growth, but it is a driving force behind our annual fundraising event, the Hoodfest car show. Our 4th annual Hoodfest will be on October 22, 2022.
Our mission at Dixie Tech is to train students to master essential skills they can take directly to the workforce, and the instructors in our automotive technician program are doing a great job of that. We will continue meeting industry demands for skilled workers in the automotive industry.
