St. George, UT – As AI-powered design tools become increasingly sophisticated, questions arise about the future of human designers. We spoke with Dixie Technical College’s Digital Design instructors about how AI fits into professional design work and why human creativity remains irreplaceable.

AI: A Powerful Tool, Not a Replacement

The Digital Design program at Dixie Tech takes a practical approach to AI integration. Rather than viewing artificial intelligence as a threat to designers, instructors teach students to leverage it as a powerful tool in their creative process.

AI proves particularly valuable during the research phases of design projects. It can help organize large amounts of visual inspiration, generate initial concept variations, and streamline the brainstorming process. Students learn to use AI for client preparation and project debriefing, making these crucial professional interactions more efficient and thorough.

The Human Eye: Still the Ultimate Judge

Despite AI’s capabilities, experienced designers can consistently identify AI-generated work. “You can always tell when something is made with AI. Art is still done by people,” explained Noah Burt, Digital Design instructor. “It’s like a kit car when it looks like a Ferrari but you can tell it’s not a Ferrari—it’s not the real deal.”

This limitation stems from AI’s fundamental nature: it synthesizes existing patterns rather than creating truly original concepts. While AI can produce technically competent designs, it lacks the cultural understanding, emotional intelligence, and creative intuition that human designers bring to their work.

Adobe’s AI Integration

Professional design software increasingly incorporates AI features. “All of the Adobe programs have AI tools in their work, so they are mastering Adobe AI tools for their work,” explained the instructors. Adobe Creative Suite now includes AI-powered tools for tasks like background removal, color matching, and content generation.

This integration represents the current industry reality: AI enhances human capabilities rather than replacing them. Designers who understand both the potential and limitations of these tools maintain competitive advantages in the marketplace.

The Irreplaceable Human Element

Art and meaningful design continue to be fundamentally human endeavors. While AI can assist with technical tasks and initial ideation, the conceptual thinking, cultural sensitivity, and emotional resonance that define great design require human insight.

Professional designers who embrace AI as a tool while developing their uniquely human skills: creativity, critical thinking, cultural understanding, and client relationships will position themselves for long-term success in an evolving industry.

Preparing Future Designers

Dixie Technical College’s Digital Design program prepares students for this AI-integrated future by teaching both traditional design principles and modern tool utilization. Students learn when and how to incorporate AI assistance while developing the human skills that remain essential for design success.

The Digital Design program’s hands-on approach ensures graduates understand the technology landscape while possessing the creative problem-solving abilities that clients value most. This balanced education prepares students to thrive in studios and agencies where AI tools complement human creativity rather than replace it.
