Dixie Technical College marks a significant achievement in regional public safety as the first cohort of its newly launched Firefighter Program prepares to graduate. The inaugural class of 14 students represents a new era of emergency response training designed to protect and serve the growing communities of Southern Utah.
Launched in January 2026, the program is led by Tim Andrus, a veteran firefighter with over 21 years of service. Under his guidance, the curriculum provides intensive, competency-based training covering structural firefighting, fire behavior, vehicle extrication, hazardous materials mitigation, and emergency medical response.
“A defining characteristic of this first cohort has been their immediate grasp of the respect and readiness required to serve the public,” said Andrus. “This commitment is evident in their daily actions, from assisting instructors with equipment to demonstrating simple courtesies toward their peers.”

Setting a New Benchmark for Excellence
The program’s rigorous structure ensures that graduates are not only skilled but highly employable. Students are currently completing requirements for several industry-recognized certifications, including:
- Firefighter I & II
- Hazardous Materials Awareness
- Hazardous Materials Operations
These credentials qualify graduates for firefighting positions both within the state of Utah and nationally. The program is already seeing immediate results, with several students currently navigating the hiring process and others having secured local employment offers pending their final certifications. Dixie Tech aims to achieve near 100% job placement within the fire service for its graduates.

Training the Next Generation
For Andrus, the success of this first class is a testament to the students’ work ethic. “Developing this program from the ground up has been a profound honor,” he reflected. “Training the ‘next generation’ of firefighters is a distinct privilege, and this class has set a rigorous benchmark for all future cohorts to meet.”
As these students transition from the classroom to the front lines, Dixie Tech remains committed to its mission of bolstering the local workforce with highly skilled, professional first responders.
“Watching our first class prepare for graduation fills me with immense confidence in the future of our public safety system and the caliber of responders protecting our communities,” Andrus concluded.
