AI Ethical Usage Policy
Purpose
Dixie Technical College encourages the responsible and innovative use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced technologies to enhance learning, creativity, and workforce readiness. This policy establishes clear expectations for ethical, transparent, and academically honest use of AI tools by all students, faculty, and staff.
AI is transforming every industry we prepare students to enter. Dixie Tech is committed to helping learners develop the judgment and skills needed to use these tools effectively while maintaining the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.
Guiding Principles
Innovation and Skill Development. Dixie Tech supports the use of AI tools to generate ideas and explore solutions, assist with drafting and brainstorming, support research and problem-solving, and enhance technical training and professional growth. Students are encouraged to use AI as a tool for learning, not as a shortcut that replaces learning.
Academic Integrity. AI-generated content must never replace a student’s own work, thinking, or competencies. Copying and pasting unmodified AI output and presenting it as your own is considered academic dishonesty.
Transparency. Students must disclose when and how they used AI in coursework, assignments, or projects—following their instructor’s required format. Faculty may require a brief statement describing AI use, citations of prompts or tools utilized, and submission of both AI-assisted and student-edited versions.
Accuracy and Critical Evaluation. AI-generated content can be incomplete, biased, or incorrect. Students are responsible for verifying accuracy, using professional judgment, and ensuring alignment with course expectations.
Ethical and Respectful Use. AI must be used responsibly and must not be used to create deceptive, harmful, or discriminatory content, manipulate or impersonate individuals, violate copyright or intellectual-property standards, or circumvent required assignments, competencies, or licensure skills.
Student Expectations
Dixie Technical College Page 1 AI Ethical Usage Policy- Students using AI tools must complete all work requiring personal skill, demonstration, or hands-on competency independently. AI cannot be used on graded exams, certification prep, or skills demonstrations unless explicitly permitted. Students must avoid copy/paste submissions. AI may assist, but the final work must reflect the student’s own understanding and effort. Students must follow all instructor-specific rules, which may be more or less restrictive depending on the program, disclose AI use according to class requirements, and ensure originality by meaningfully revising, adding personal insight, and integrating learning.
Faculty Expectations
- Faculty are encouraged to integrate AI tools into instruction where appropriate, clearly communicate assignment-specific AI expectations, teach students how to critically evaluate AI output, model ethical, transparent use of AI, and address violations consistently and fairly.
Acceptable and Unacceptable Use
Acceptable Use. Acceptable use of AI includes using AI for brainstorming or outlining, getting help understanding concepts, using AI for grammar checking or revision, generating practice scenarios or study aids, and enhancing technical learning through simulations or troubleshooting tools.
Unacceptable Use. Unacceptable use of AI includes copy/pasting AI-generated answers and submitting them as original work, using AI to complete exams, skills assessments, or certification-related tasks, submitting AI-created images, code, or written content without attribution, using AI to fabricate data, citations, or credentials, and relying on AI to replace required hands-on skill development.
Privacy and Data Responsibility
- Students and employees must not input sensitive, personal, or confidential information into AI tools unless the tool is approved for secure educational use. This includes social security numbers, private student information, patient or client data, and internal college records.
Consequences of Misuse
Violations of this policy—including undisclosed or inappropriate use of AI—may be treated as academic dishonesty.
Commitment to Industry Alignment
Because Dixie Tech prepares students for rapidly evolving careers, this policy will be reviewed as needed to remain aligned with employer expectations, industry
