This cutting-edge field explores the intersection of technology and living things, to create positive change. Whether it’s discovering better ways to deliver medicine, creating better treatments, improving nutritional supplements, using technology to aid in rehabilitation, or even working towards creating artificial limbs. In this extremely hands-on program, students will work in a lab setting learning anything from DNA manipulation and analysis, lab techniques, and quality control, to good manufacturing practices. At the end of their studies and certification, students will be able to work in any kind of lab setting, from a diagnostic lab in a hospital to an industrial lab working alongside established chemists and biologists to ensure products are up to safety standards.
Biotechnicians refer back to the basics of biology on a daily basis
From safety gear to aseptic techniques, students will learn everything there is to know about how to safely and effectively work in any kind of lab and industry setting.
Students will practice various techniques used to analyze everything from data to DNA.
Through instruction and practice, students will learn how to use and calibrate lab equipment that will be used throughout their careers.
Students will be introduced to teamwork in a lab setting and will become familiar with the role bio technicians play in a larger team of scientists.
Learn all of the hands-on skills and knowledge needed to pass the Biotechnician Assistant Credentialing Exam.
Are captivated by conducting biological research and experiments.
Enjoy solving complex problems using critical and out-of-the-box thinking skills.
Have a strong desire to work in the medical field, but prefer to not work directly with patients.
Their extensive lab experiences provide first-hand knowledge of the experiences that can be expected while working in a biological research lab.

Laurie Mathis earned her bachelor’s degree in biology and secondary education from Dixie State University. A year later, she began instructing biology labs at DSU and has been doing that for the last seven years. Laurie joined the Dixie Tech faculty in 2022 as the lead instructor of the Biotechnology program. “I really enjoy watching the students learn and seeing the light of understanding turn on when they ‘get it.’”
