Drafting and Design allows students to focus on Architectural, Civil, or Mechanical Drafting using a variety of industry-standard software including AutoCAD, REVIT, SKETCH-UP, Solid Works, Civil 3D, and various 3D rendering programs. Students take their own ideas, design them and create a full set of construction or manufacturing documents. Each student is required to complete a final project displaying the full gambit of their skill sets as a portfolio to share with potential employers.

What You Will Learn In Drafting and Design Program
Hand Drafting
Learn the fundamental skills of drawing by hand including sketching, orthographic and isometric projections.
Parametric Modeling and 3D Printing
Build your designs on the computer. Quickly iterate, evaluate, and refine your designs, then bring them to life using a 3D printer.
Print Reading
Accurately read and interpret architectural and mechanical prints. Understand engineering terminology and symbols.
Create 2D Prints
Create accurate drawings for production, including all appropriate details according to industry standards.
Final Project
Take your own idea from the very beginning until ready to be made. This includes sketches, prototypes, models, renderings, production drawings, and a presentation.

About Your Drafting and Design Instructors

BILL MCMURRIN
Bill McMurrin earned a Master’s of Architecture degree in 1980 from UCLA, has been a licensed architect since 1984 and has maintained membership in the American Institute of Architects during his entire career. Bill has designed residential and commercial projects throughout Utah and surrounding states and as far away as Berlin, Germany.
Bill has been an adjunct instructor in Drafting since 1982 and joined the faculty at Dixie Tech as the full-time drafting and design instructor in 2012. “Teaching material that requires a high level of creativity and then watching that creativity take off in a student is a thrill and a privilege.”

WARREN ALTAFFER
Warren Altaffer earned an Associate’s Degree in Drafting & Design, a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Business Management, and a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology.
After a rewarding 42 year career in Drafting, Design, and Engineering, Warren relocated to Hurricane for retirement. It didn’t take long for Warren to realize that he had much to offer the next generations. He joined the Dixie Tech faculty as an adjunct instructor in 2018.

MARK RANE
Mark Rane is a designer, artist, and teacher. He grew up on the east coast and attended Brigham Young University where he studied both industrial and product design. Mark has extensive experience designing bicycles and outdoor sporting equipment. He enjoys his time designing, teaching, mountain biking, and exploring the desert with his wife and three kids.
