Launch your career in the skilled trades with Dixie Tech’s accredited Plumbing Residential program, designed for students who enjoy working with their hands, solving real-world problems, and building practical skills that lead directly to employment. This hands-on, tool-driven program is your first step toward becoming a licensed Residential Journeyman Plumber in Utah.
Through a combination of classroom instruction and lab-based training, you’ll master the fundamentals of modern plumbing systems, including drainage design, water supply systems, water heating, piping, and watertight joint techniques—all taught in alignment with the International Plumbing Code (IPC). Students gain real experience working with the same tools, materials, and safety standards used by professionals in the field. After completing the Plumbing Residential program, graduates are encouraged to advance into the Plumbing Apprenticeship program , where they’ll continue on-the-job training and further their education to qualify for journeyman licensing.
As a student of this program, you will:
- Design and install waste, vent, and potable water systems
- Interpret and apply rules from the International Plumbing Code (IPC)
- Create reliable, leak-free pipe joints using heat, molds, and filler materials
- Install and maintain water heating systems safely and efficiently

Plumbing Residential
Program Description
The Plumbing Residential program at Dixie Technical College is designed to provide students with the specialized skills and knowledge required to excel in residential plumbing. This program focuses on practical training and theoretical understanding, equipping students to handle various residential plumbing tasks with proficiency and confidence. Graduates will be prepared to meet industry standards and pursue rewarding careers as apprentice plumbers.
Attendance Standard: This program has a minimum attendance standard of 83% (75 hours per semester).
Learning Objectives
- Basic understanding of the International Plumbing Code (IPC) and International Mechanical Code (IMC)
- Basic understanding of plumbing mathematics
- Proficiency in copper soldering and brazing techniques
- Hands-on experience with fixtures, faucets, appliances, and residential fire sprinklers
- Hands-on experience with different piping materials and techniques for cutting, fitting, and joining pipes
- Emphasis on job site safety practices, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to safety regulations
- Develop occupational skills, job knowledge, work habits, and attitudes essential for success in the plumbing field
- Determine the application of the International Plumbing Code (IPC).
- Demonstrate how to navigate the International Plumbing Code (IPC).
- Calculate sizing of various piping, including natural gas, supply, and waste lines. Demonstrate the application of the International Fuel Gas Code.
- Demonstrate the application of the International Mechanical Code.
- Demonstrate practical application of plumbing mathematics.
- Apply critical and practical thinking skills necessary to pass the State Residential Journeyman’s Test.

Each program has specific testing score requirements for admission. The scores are listed in the drop-down tabs below. You may be exempt from taking the Accuplacer Entrance Assessment if you provide proof of one or more of the following:
- Qualifying ACT or SAT scores (see drop-down tabs below)
- College coursework (MATH 900+ and ENGLISH 1000+) with a grade of B- or higher
- An Associate’s, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree
