Become A Commercial Electrician

Completing the Electrical Commercial Program of 360 hours and 4000 paid on the job training hours is a prerequisite for this program. Electricians are among the highest paid in the construction industry according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Electrical Apprentices must register with the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing, and complete an additional 4000 hours of paid on the job training as a licensed apprentice, and complete the required classroom instruction of 360 hours to take the state Commercial Journeyman Exam.

Formulas and calculations to find conductor size, overcurrent protection size of motors.

Grounding and Bonding

Understanding the NEC code regulations of grounding and bonding as well as calculating conductor sizes.

Motor Control Wiring

Knowledge of line diagrams and symbols to properly wire motor control circuits, used in commercial and industrial applications.

Blueprint Reading

Reading and understanding how to navigate and understand commercial and residential blueprints.

Conductor Sizing

Calculations and NEC requirements for calculating conductor sizes for branch circuits, services, and various other conductors.

      About Your Electrical Instructor

      TJ EMPEY

      TJ Empey followed in his father’s footsteps and began the Electrical Apprenticeship program right after high school, eventually earning the designation of Master Electrician. He worked in the field for several years before joining the Dixie Tech faculty as a full-time Electrical Apprenticeship instructor.

      TJ teaches and manages a large cadre of electricians and instructors who keep our Electrical Apprenticeship program vibrant. “It’s electrifying to see the spark in a student’s eyes when they have a grounded understanding of a subject.”
