The primary focus of the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician program is to expand training from the EMT program which is a prerequisite for Advanced EMT. “Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response system. AEMTs are trained to perform advanced interventions. The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician is a link from the scene of an accident to the emergency health care facility.”

      About Your advanced emt Instructors

      ROLAND BARLOW

      Roland Barlow has emergency medical services running through his veins! As a kid, he hung around the firehouse with his father who was Fire Chief. Upon high school graduation, Roland began the first of many certifications becoming a firefighter, an EMT, and finally a Paramedic.

      He is a Certified Instructor for the American Heart Association, Course Coordinator and Training Officer for the Utah Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, and Course Coordinator Instructor for Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC). Roland has received many honors over the course of his career.

      In 2016 he was honored as Distinguished Coordinator Of The Year for EMSC from Primary Children’s Hospital. After teaching adjunct for many years, Roland joined the faculty as a full time instructor at Dixie Tech in 2007. Roland “loves to see students choose careers in EMS and go on to make a difference in the lives of others”.

      SHELLIE HURT

      Shellie Hurt earned her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Utah State University and went on to graduate from the Utah Fire Academy. She began her career in Fire/EMS in 2004 and has been part of the Ivins City Fire Department team ever since. Shellie joined the faculty at Dixie Tech as an adjunct in 2011.

      Shellie’s view of teaching is “supporting students and providing them with the tools they need to face what’s ahead with confidence. It’s a true privilege to be a part of their professional careers in a high-demand field.” Shellie lives by the motto: “today is a day of opportunity, do not let it go to waste” You can be sure of one thing: she will not waste a moment of your time in her classroom!
