This program is a prerequisite for the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Program and is essential for those pursuing careers in law enforcement, firefighting, or emergency medicine. You’ll gain the emergency skills necessary to assess patient conditions and manage respiratory, cardiac, and trauma situations with confidence.
Training includes a combination of classroom instruction and clinical lab experience, where you’ll learn basic first aid, CPR, patient assessment, airway management, shock and bleeding control, triage, and both emergent and non-emergent patient movement. From multi casualty incidents to life saving techniques, the program prepares you to deliver frontline medical care and respond effectively in high stress emergency scenarios.
As a student of this program, you will:
- Take and monitor vital signs, understand patient history, and perform assessments
- Apply bleeding control, wound treatment, shock management, and emergency childbirth protocol
- Use basic airway management and CPR lifesaving techniques
- Conduct triage and patient transport safely in multi-casualty incidents
- Execute prehospital care within Utah’s EMS system framework

Emergency Medical Technician
Program Description
The Emergency Medical Technician program provides training for out-of-hospital emergency medical care and transportation of critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical services (EMS) system. Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) have the basic knowledge and skills to stabilize and safely transport patients from non-emergency and routine medical transports to life-threatening emergencies. Under medical oversight, EMTs function as part of a comprehensive EMS response system. EMTs perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance. EMTs are a critical link between the scene of an emergency and the health care system.
Attendance Standard: This program has a minimum attendance standard of 80%.
Learning Objectives
- Apply fundamental knowledge of the anatomy and function of all human systems to the practice of EMS.
- Use foundational anatomical and medical terms and abbreviations in written and oral communication with colleagues and other health care professionals.
- Apply fundamental knowledge of the pathophysiology of respiration and perfusion to patient assessment and management.
- Apply fundamental knowledge of lifespan development to patient assessment and management.
- Properly administer or assist in administering medications to a patient during an emergency.
- Utilize fundamental knowledge of the EMS system, safety/well-being of the EMT, and medical/legal and ethical issues in the provision of emergency care.
- Apply knowledge (fundamental depth, foundational breadth) of anatomy and physiology to patient assessment and management to ensure a patent airway, adequate mechanical ventilation, and respiration for patients of all ages.
- Interpret scene information and patient assessment findings (scene size-up, primary and secondary assessment, patient history, reassessment) to guide emergency management.
- Provide basic emergency care and transportation based on assessment findings for an acutely ill patient.
- Apply fundamental knowledge of the causes, pathophysiology, and management of shock, respiratory failure or arrest, cardiac failure or arrest, and post-resuscitation management.
- Provide basic emergency care and transportation based on assessment findings for an acutely injured patient.
- Utilize principles of growth, development, aging, and assessment findings to provide basic emergency care and transportation for a patient with special needs.
- Perform the following operational roles and responsibilities to ensure patient, public, and personnel safety when responding to an emergency.

Tuition & Fees must be paid before registering for class unless a payment plan or other funding options have been approved and signed. Information is subject to change without notice.
Tuition is waived for high school students, and high school students are eligible for a $120 scholarship.

- College coursework (MATH 900+ and ENGLISH 1000+) with a grade of B- or higher
- An Associate’s, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree
