Program Overview

Learn more about our Accredited Pharmacy Technician program

No prior experience required! The Pharmacy Technician program prepares students to support pharmacists by performing a wide range of practice-related duties for community, institutional, compounding, long-term care, mail-order, and other pharmaceutical settings.

Students learn the most common medications, calculate dosages, process prescriptions, bill third-party insurance, learn aseptic techniques, and prepare sterile and non-sterile compounded medications. Students receive extensive hands-on training in the lab area using advanced pharmacy technology.

 As a student of this program, you will:

    • Practice personal and interpersonal skills needed in various pharmacy settings.
    • Demonstrate the pharmacy technician’s role in the medication-use process and wellness promotion.
    • Recall the most utilized drugs by brand and generic name, indications, and interactions.
    • Solve pharmacy mathematical calculations.
    • Prepare sterile and non-sterile compounds.

Attainable Certificates include:

    • Accredited Dixie Technical College Certificate
    • National Certification through PTCB or ExCPT
    • Basic Life Support (BLS)
    • Immunization Certification

High School: Open to Juniors and Seniors. Must be 17 years old within 3 months of program start date to be eligible for clinical hours. Tuition is waived for high school students, however they are still responsible for course fees, textbooks and additional costs.

Pharmacy Technician 

In this pharmacy tech program, students gain hands-on experience working in a simulated retail or hospital pharmacy. Students practice critical skills like counting and measuring medications, compounding and mixing, packaging and labeling prescriptions, accepting payments, processing insurance, and providing customer service.

Training also covers pharmacy operations like inventory, ordering, labeling, drug storage and distribution, patient records, billing, gathering information for the pharmacist, and distributing printed materials. The well-rounded curriculum prepares students for diverse pharmacy tech roles. The National Pass rate for our 2023 graduates is 95%.

TIMAREE FULLERTON

With over 9 years of experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant, Timaree transitioned to pharmaceutical roles at St. George Regional Hospital and Fusion Specialty Pharmacy after taking the pharmacy program in 2015. She has also held the director of pharmacy role at Dixie Tech since 2020. Timaree enjoys camping, baking, and cheering for her kids at sports and dance events.

 

Chris Richey

After graduating from the Dixie Tech Pharmacy program in 2012 Chris gained 10 years experience as a pharmacy tech working at Harmons, C3, and Fusion, Chris brings valuable hands-on experience to prepare students for the pharmacy industry. Outside of teaching, he enjoys golfing, collecting shoes, and gaming.
