The Diesel Technician program at Dixie Technical College prepares students for great careers working on heavy-duty diesel trucks as well as diesel engines used in many manufacturing settings. Taught in an ASE Education Foundation certified shop and using ASE curriculum, students develop current industry standard practices  *Basic technician hand tools required for the program.

What You Will Learn In The Diesel technology Program

Diesel Engines

This course provides the student with introductory theory and hands-on training in basic operation, parts, and overhaul procedures of a diesel engine. The course covers the removal, service, and repair of engine blocks, crankshafts, pistons, rings, connecting rods, camshafts, valve trains, injection pumps, and
accessories in both small and large diesel engines.


This course provides instructions and hands-on training of fluid power (hydraulics) as used in modern mobile equipment. Instruction includes practical theory and hands-on training related to the operation and repair of hydraulic/pneumatic components and systems. This course emphasizes testing,
troubleshooting, design, and use of hydraulic schematics.


This course provides the student with theory and hands-on experience on maintenance and repair of the heavy duty drive train systems. Instruction and repair will cover clutches, transmissions, drive lines, and differentials. The student will be required to perform clutch adjustments and replacement, pull transmissions, pull and repair drive lines and u-joints, and differentials.


This course provides the student with theory and hands-on experience in the troubleshooting and repair of heavy-duty truck air conditioning systems. Instruction covers condensers; check valves; driers; compressors; evaporators; controls; heating and engine cooling systems; operating systems and controls; and refrigerant recovery, recycling, and handling.

Suspension and Steering

This course provides theory and hands-on experience for students on the maintenance and repair of front axles, alignment, truck frames, suspension system, steering system, and coupling devices. Students will receive training on front end components, steering components, frame and suspension components, coupling devices, and alignment. Students will be required to maintain, remove and replace suspension and steering components.

      About Your Diesel technology Instructors


      Guy Whalen has been a diesel mechanic since 2011. He holds an associate degree in Agriculture Technology from Utah State but chose to focus his career as a Diesel Technician because he realized the importance of that skill set in keeping a working farm or ranch functioning.

      His experience in the industry includes working as a diesel tech, a service advisor, and finally, a shop owner. Guy joined the faculty at Dixie Tech in 2021 as a Diesel Tech instructor. “The best part of teaching at Dixie Tech is our students’ enthusiasm.I always tell my students that different isn’t wrong and that we are all learning on our own level.”


      Robert Nelson started his career working in his family’s trucking company while in high school. He has worked throughout the trade from over-the-road trucking, diesel dealership service & repair, and as a foreman for a large excavation company. Robert Joined the faculty at Dixie Technical College in 2018.


      Shawn Bain’s career has continued to evolve over the years but has always involved working with his mind and his hands-on, challenging equipment. From diesel tech to heavy equipment operation to manufacturing equipment maintenance to welding and collision repair, Shawn has done the work and appreciates the processes.
