Graduation Attire
What type of clothing should I wear underneath my gown?
Please wear business casual, school-appropriate attire under your gown. Once the commencement ceremony begins, keep your gown fully zipped.
Can I wear religious or cultural attire at school graduation ceremonies?
Utah Code 53G-4-413 outlines what is allowed to be worn at graduation ceremonies.

53G-4-414. Religious or cultural attire at school graduation ceremonies.
(1) As used in this section:
(a) “Adornment” means something that a student attaches to or wears with, but does not replace, graduation attire.
(b) “Cultural” means recognized practices and traditions of a certain group of people.
(c) “Graduation attire” means attire that an LEA requires a student to wear as part of the dress code for a graduation ceremony.
(d) “Graduation ceremony” means a high school graduation ceremony.
(2) A student may wear recognized items of cultural or religious significance as an adornment at a graduation ceremony.
(3)
(a) Notwithstanding Subsection (2), an LEA may prohibit a student from wearing an item of adornment that is likely to cause a substantial disruption of, or material interference with, the graduation ceremony.
(b) Any prohibition imposed by an LEA on a student’s item of cultural or religious significance worn as an adornment shall be by the least restrictive means necessary to accomplish a specifically identified compelling governmental interest.
(4) An individual may bring a violation of this section to the state board in accordance with the process described in Subsection 53E-3-401(8)(d).
(5) Nothing in this section limits an LEA’s authority related to student expression under applicable federal and state law.
(6) Nothing in this section shall limit or impair the rights of a qualifying student under Section 53G-4-412 to wear tribal regalia to a graduation ceremony.

Can I decorate my Graduation Cap?
Celebrate Graduation Your Way!
Decorated caps can be a great memento and way to show your Dixie Tech spirit. Decorated caps can assist family members in spotting graduates in the crowd. The cap’s flat surface is a perfect canvas to display appropriate personal expressions with ceremonial attire.

What is appropriate?
- Graduation year.
- Achievements and awards.
- Enthusiastic, positive, and inspiring quotes and goals.
- Thank you to family, friends, and teachers who impacted your education.
- Favorite hands-on activities while attending Dixie Tech.
What is NOT permitted?
- Three-dimensional objects. Decorations should be two-dimensional and not have lights or noise or drape over the sides of the cap.
- Any solicitations, advertisements, or promotions of a business
- Reference anything that could present an unacceptable risk of liability or present inherent danger:
- Products used to injure or kill
- Firearms, weapons, and explosives
- Inhibiting consumables; alcohol, drug substances, smoking, tobacco, and paraphernalia.
- Reference anything that jeopardizes the university’s position of neutrality as a state entity:
- Religious affiliation, candidates, and issues
- Political affiliation, candidates, and issues
- Reference anything that incites or produces imminent lawless, illegal, seditious, or illicit behavior and activities; or creates a hostile environment:
- Obscene, profane, vulgar, lewd, demeaning, degrading, defaming, or discriminatory content
- Statements impugning other universities
- Sexually suggestive or explicit (acts, language, and references third-party organizations)
- Vulgar language
- Drug paraphernalia related substances
- Content containing another entity’s trademark
- Content promoting or inciting the armed resistance of rebellion against an established authority of the nation, state, city, or campus

If you are eligible to graduate, you will receive an email with RSVP instructions. If you do not receive the email or need additional information, contact the front desk at 435-674-8400.
