St. George, UT – Dixie Technical College offers aspiring nurses a streamlined, “stackable” pathway to becoming a Registered Nurse (RN). This route is often faster and more affordable than traditional four-year programs, allowing students to earn while they learn. Practical Nursing (PN) instructors Megan Mickelson and Brenna Thomas explain how Dixie Tech prepares students to bridge seamlessly into RN programs at Utah’s top universities.
Building From the Ground Up
The journey begins with the Dixie Tech Nursing Assistant (CNA) program. Students master over 70 essential skills through classroom instruction, lab practice, and 24 hours of clinical experience.
“The CNA students leave our program ready for employment or to enter a nursing program,” explained Thomas. “Many students work as a CNA while they are in the PN program to gain real-world experience.”

The Strategic Bridge to an RN
After completing the CNA program at Dixie Tech and essential prerequisites (Anatomy, Physiology, and Psychology at an accredited university), students can enroll in the Practical Nursing (PN) program at Dixie Tech. This intensive program includes 22 full clinical days across hospitals and long-term care facilities.
Upon graduating as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), students are perfectly positioned to enter “Bridge” or “LPN-to-RN” programs at partner universities:
- Utah Tech University Offers a seamless LPN-to-RN bridge that allows Dixie Tech grads to transition into their Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) and eventually their BSN.
- Southern Utah University (SUU) Provides a perfect pathway for LPNs to advance their education.
- Weber State University Renowned for its flexible nursing ladders, Weber State offers an LPN-to-RN track that can be completed at various satellite locations, including those in Southern Utah.
“Many students report that the bridge into their RN was a piece of cake after completing our PN program,” Thomas emphasized. “It is rigorous, but they are prepared!”
Hands-On Learning From Week Seven
Unlike traditional universities that require two years of general education before touching a stethoscope, Dixie Tech PN students dive directly into the field.
“Students don’t spend time on unrelated courses. They dive into nursing theory, and at seven weeks, they start clinical practice,” Mickelson noted. This accelerated approach builds confidence early, making the eventual transition to Utah Tech or Weber State’s clinical rotations much smoother.

Individual Attention Makes the Difference
With small class sizes, instructors ensure no one is left behind. “We pay close attention to progress and work hard to help our students succeed,” Thomas explained. This supportive environment is a hallmark of Dixie Tech, fostering a culture where faculty are deeply invested in seeing students reach the RN level and beyond.
Proven Success Stories
The effectiveness of this pathway is clear. One Dixie Tech graduate completed the PN program in October 2022, worked as a nurse apprentice while attending an RN bridge program, passed the RN NCLEX in September 2023, and is now enrolled in a Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) program at the University of Utah.
